in 1998, these Sprenger stirrups had their flexibility improved by having the joint expended with an additional link, meaning they can pivot in four directions simultaneously; left, right, forwards and backwards. This means they are a lot more flexible than most stirrups which have little or no flexibility. 

The Sprenger System 4 stirrups relieves hips, knees and ankles during riding and particularly spares ligaments and menisci.
